Concert for Cancer in Post Falls Sept. 22

A couple of rock 'n' roll bands and a Post Falls music venue and bar are teaming up for a fundraiser next month to help a young man suffering with cancer.
Rathdrum resident Wyatt Lassiter, 23, was diagnosed with large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma this spring, and the medical bills are mounting, his family says.
"The expense of treating cancer - it's just overwhelming," said Dave Sims, a quadriplegic guitarist for the band, Archer. Sims, who also is Lassiter's father-in-law, plays guitar with the instrument laying flat on a keyboard stand.
Sims also is organizing the fundraiser, which is being called Concert for Cancer and is scheduled for the night of Sept. 22 at the Grail in Post Falls.
Sims said, "The last thing these young people need to worry about while they're fighting for life is money."
Because of the size, type and location of Lassiter's tumor - between a lung and his heart - the only available course of action is to bombard it with massive amounts of chemotherapy, he said.
Lassiter has a job with health insurance benefits, as does his wife, Brianna, 23, but it's not nearly enough to cover the expenses. They were married July 30, 2011.
Brianna said, "We are very humbled that the community would come together to help."
Lassiter's father also is fighting cancer. Sims said, "It has taken a turn for the worse in the past few weeks, and we don't know if he'll be able to attend."
As for Wyatt Lassiter, the cost for deductibles and non-covered treatment items put him and his wife in a financial hole they might not be able to escape, Sims said.
Sims said Lassiter has finished chemotherapy, at least for now, and he is starting radiation next.
"He's working when he can, when he's not dealing with the side effects," Sims said.
The band Archer, popular in Seattle in the 1980s, will host the evening of food, drink and music. Doors open at 6 p.m. and Archer takes the stage at 9 p.m. Christian rock band So Be It, of Coeur d'Alene, will open the show.
Lang Sumner, owner of the Grail, said, "We are proud to be a sponsor of this event, and happy to donate our facilities to the cause."
Ninety percent of proceeds go to medical expenses for Lassiter, and 10 percent of proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The public can donate in-person at any Idaho Independent Bank location. Checks should be payable to Wyatt Lassiter, and note "gift" or "Concert for Cancer."
The concert admission cost is $10 at the door. Money also will be raised through the sale of T-shirts, hats and other items. Sims said there will be a barbecue with a Luau theme, complete with a roasted pig.
"We're hoping to have 400 to 500 people come out," Sims said.
