SPOKANE - One half of Adam Talley was plenty for East Valley, and one half of the Knights' star running back proved too much for the Lakeland Hawks.
Talley, who sat out the first half due to a violation of team rules, rushed for three touchdowns and kicked a field goal in the second half as East Valley pulled away for a 38-14 victory over the Hawks on Friday night in nonleague play at East Valley High.
"There's no question, he's a fine player. He did a great job," Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. "I think they went after a couple of our kids on defense in the second half, and the addition of Talley made a big difference."
Talley scored on runs of 7, 12 and 14 yards for East Valley (2-0), which trailed 7-6 at halftime. He finished with 57 yards on 14 carries.
He made that much of a difference?
"Yes," East Valley coach Adam Fisher said. "But we fixed some things up front at halftime; we did a very poor job run blocking and pass blocking in the first half.”
Sophomore Tyrel Derrick gave Lakeland (0-2) a spark late in the first half, picking off a Taylor Watkins pass and racing 65 yards for a touchdown with 3:26 left in the half. Cade Coffey’s PAT sent the Hawks to the locker room with the lead.
Lakeland took the second-half kickoff and drove to the East Valley 39, where on fourth down and 6, Derek Bayley’s deep pass to Troy Carr was just off his hands at the goal line.
East Valley scored on its first five possessions of the second half — four touchdowns and a field goal — to pull away.
The Knights were also effective passing. Watkins, a senior, passed for 238 yards and a touchdown. J.T. Phelan, a 6-foot-2 junior, had six catches for 53 yards, all in the first half. Gage Burland, who also had to sit out the first half because of violation of team rules, caught four for 82 yards in the second half.
“The way they played us defensively, that put us one-on-one (on the outside),” Fisher said. “We have some very good athletes, so depending on what the defense allows, that’s what we’ll take. Last week (at Sandpoint) we ran the ball a ton, this week we threw the ball a little bit more, because that’s what they were giving us.”
“We knew they had speed, so to get up and press them was dangerous for us,” Kiefer said. “They were throwing it underneath when we were back, and they were throwing it over the top when we were up.”
East Valley outgained Lakeland 331-204 and controlled the ball, running 68 plays to 45 for the Hawks.
Lakeland plays host to Cheney next Friday.

“I’ve been very impressed by Zach’s natural ability to rush the passer,” Eck said. “And he’s worked hard on his body, he’s up to about 222 pounds now, and I really think he can be a difference maker for us. He’s still doing some things with the linebackers, but I think his speed can give some offensive linemen problems (as an edge rusher).”

“The whole process has been completely amazing,” said Nathan Williams, now in his fourth season as the Badgers boys basketball coach. “And the parents … it’s an hour and a half to Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, when we’d play an AAU game, and an hour and a half back, and there were so many times there was 6, 8 inches of snow. And we’ve got a game at 8 a.m. They’d always schedule us at 8 a.m., coming from Bonners. So we’re waking up at 5 … it was crazy. But the commitment from the parents and the kids has been amazing.”
