COEUR d'ALENE - George J. Bondurant, who was convicted 13 years ago of involuntary manslaughter in Bonner County, pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.
U.S. District Court Judge Edward Lodge scheduled sentencing for Dec. 3. He will remain in custody until sentencing.
In the fall of 1999, then 22-year-old Bondurant was sentenced to 10 years in prison by 1st District Court Judge James Michaud in Bonner County. That case involved the shooting death of Bondurant's 34-year-old girlfriend, Kathryn J. Oliver, at their home near Sandpoint. Oliver was a mother of three.
Oliver's family wanted him tried for murder, but his charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter in a plea deal with the Bonner County prosecutor.
Bondurant's defense lawyer argued at the time that his client didn't pull the trigger. A 911 call from Bondurant was recorded and captured him pleading with emergency responders to hurry to the couple's home.
Oliver's family pointed to a history of domestic violence she suffered at the hands of Bondurant.
As a felon, Bondurant is prohibited from possessing firearms.
But in early May this year, Bondurant was found in possession of a Remington 20-gauge shotgun, according to an indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Coeur d'Alene on May 15.
