Hardy lifts O's into tie atop AL East

* AMERICAN LEAGUE

J.J. Hardy homered twice, doubled and drove in five runs, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 9-2 on Tuesday night and moved into a tie for the AL East lead.

Hardy went 4 for 5 to help Baltimore pull even atop the division with the New York Yankees, who lost 4-3 at Boston. The Rays are two games behind the co-leaders.

Chris Davis homered and Matt Wieters had three hits and two RBIs for Baltimore.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3: Jacoby Ellsbury singled in the winning run with his fourth hit of the game in the ninth and Boston beat visiting New York.

Royals 9, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, Will Smith pitched seven shutout innings, and Kansas City thumped Minnesota.

Rangers 6, Indians 4: At Arlington, Texas, Adrian Beltre homered, Matt Harrison worked into the sixth inning for his 16th victory and Texas beat Cleveland.

Tigers 5, White Sox 3: Doug Fister pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, leading host Detroit past Chicago.

Athletics 6, Angels 5: At Anaheim, Calif., Jerry Blevins got Howie Kendrick to ground into a game-ending double play with two runners on in the ninth, and Oakland held off Los Angeles.

* NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 9, Marlins 7: Jimmy Rollins homered and drove in three runs and Roy Halladay won again as Philadelphia outslugged visiting Miami.

Reds 5, Pirates 3: Mike Leake pitched seven innings, had a pair of hits and scored on a dash home off a wild pitch, leading host Cincinnati to a victory over fading Pittsburgh.

Nationals 5, Mets 3: Bryce Harper had his first four-hit game and pinch-hitter Tyler Moore launched a go-ahead homer off R.A. Dickey in the seventh inning to lift Washington at New York.

Brewers 5, Braves 0: Marco Estrada pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, Rickie Weeks and Aramis Ramirez homered and Milwaukee beat visiting Atlanta.

Giants 9, Rockies 8: At Denver, Brandon Belt drove in four runs, helping San Francisco beat Colorado.

Padres 6, Cardinals 4: Logan Forsythe and Alexi Amarista had key hits in a five-run fourth, and host San Diego beat St. Louis.

Astros 1, Cubs 0: Jimmy Paredes singled and scored an unearned run in the third and Houston beat visiting Chicago.

Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 0: At Phoenix, Ian Kennedy pitched neatly into the eighth inning and Arizona used an unearned run to beat Clayton Kershaw and Los Angeles.
