The Whitefish boys cross-country team emerged from a stacked field at the Silverwood Coaster Cross meet in Athol, Idaho, with a top-10 finish. The Bulldogs took sixth overall out of 25 teams from Montana, Idaho and Washington.

The boys were led by the individual performances of Fischer Gangemi and Jace Kalbfleisch. They finished in 13th and 18th places, respectively. Caleb Knox (45th), Thomas Henson (53rd) and Keaton Grove (79th) rounded out the team scoring for WHS.

“Fischer and Jace ran fantastic for this early in the season. They both were able to compete with some of the best runners in the region,” said Whitefish’s head coach Sara Brist. “Caleb ran the best race of his career to help the team to a high level of performance.”

Brist said the tourney allowed Whitefish to race conference opponents and new teams.

“It was a nice blend of new surroundings with still being able to compare against some of the more familiar competition that we’re used to seeing,” she said.

The Lady Bulldogs competed well, finishing in 14th position. They were led by sophomore Sarah Latcham (55th) and freshman Barrett Gray (62nd). Peyton Twete also had a nice race to finish in 79th place to help the team in the final scoring.

“The field was large,” Brist said. “Sarah and Barrett both ran very well for us. Both of them are new to the sport, yet they ran like veterans today.”

Brist commended Twete’s performance.

“She was very aggressive and that helped her in such a large field,” she said. “I was happy with the improvement of all of our runners. With it being so early in the season, we are coming around quickly.”

Whitefish competes in the Ronan Invitational against the rest of the conference this coming weekend in Pablo.
