Knights start grid campaign with explosive win

ROYAL CITY - In a game that was untimely for The Royal Register's Labor Day deadline, Royal High School opened the football season on Aug. 31 with a 52-14 thrashing of Cascade that featured explosive scoring plays.

Alex Myrick returned a kickoff 88 yards for a score and added a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Laddie Goroski returned another punt 63 yards for a score. The Knights built a 34-7 lead and coasted in from there.

"The play of the game was Brady Dixon knocking down two defenders to spring Damien (Delarosa) on a long pass play," coach Wiley Allred said.

Dixon had a big night. He caught three passes for 56 yards and three scores. On defense he produced eight tackles, including one for loss.

Delarosa had a stellar night punting. He averaged 48 yards on two boots. And led all receivers with 62 yards on two catches.

Christian Guerrero, Kent Christensen, Luis Garcia and Goroski all had one catch for 16, 14, eight and five yards respectively.

Myrick had a solid night at quarterback. He completed nine of 16 passes for 161 yards with no interceptions. He also rushed nine times for 62 yards.

Delarosa led rushers with 87 yards on 10 carries. Guerrero carried seven times for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Jacob Lee added 39 yards on five carries and scored once, Gerard Weyns carried three times for 21 yards, and Manny Quintero had two carries for 10 yards.

Royal outrushed Cascade 240 yards to 152.

Myrick was a leader on defense. He posted nine tackles, three assists and one interception.
