MOSCOW - What the Lake City Timberwolves couldn't quite do in their last football game, they did on Saturday night.

Finish.

Mitch Bevacqua caught touchdown passes of 47 and 75 yards, and also ran for a 67-yard score as the Timberwolves beat the W.F. West Bearcats of Chehalis, Wash., 52-14 at the Idaho Football Classic at the Kibbie Dome.

"It was really close to the way we played at Eagle (on Aug. 24)," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "Last week (a 27-27 tie vs. Kennewick on Aug. 31), we'd move the ball but get stopped."

Jerry Louie-McGee scored on the game’s third play, running for a 67-yard touchdown to put the Timberwolves up early on. Lake City stopped the Bearcats’ first two drives, getting quarterback sacks by Julian Osborne and Ray Buley on third down to halt each drive.

“We talked about them believing in themselves,” Troxel said. “We needed to have something to show for how good of a team they really are.”

Lake City (1-1-1) hosts Post Falls in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both on Friday.

“It was a good win for us,” Bevacqua said. “We needed it going into Post Falls next weekend. We need to get ready for them.”

Of the touchdowns, Bevacqua added that he took advantage of mistakes in the W.F. West (2-1) secondary.

“I had the safety bite every time and just ran past him,” Bevacqua said. “Having the bye week (last week) really got us motivated.”

Bruce Shipley finished the game with 11 completions in 18 attempts for 180 yards and an interception for Lake City, with 160 of those passing yards going to Bevacqua, on five receptions.

“It was nice to see them get some connections and get things going in that direction,” said Troxel of the passing game. “Brandon Johnson had some nice runs tonight. With that offense put together, teams are going to have some problems trying to put something together to stop them.”

W.F. West coach Bob Wollan, who previously coached at Pullman High, knew the Lake City depth might bring his team problems.

“They hurt us with their size and speed,” Wollan said. “Mainly their speed hurt us. We were going to try and weather the storm early on, but let them too far out.”

Lake City led 31-7 just 15 minutes into the game.

“It was really difficult to hang in there with them,” Wollan said. “They’re a really good football team and we’ll try to take what we can and learn from it.”

Earlier at the Dome, Sutter (Calif.) beat Clarkston 50-20 and Sequoia (Calif.) beat Lewiston 21-13.
