Soccer: Two straight for Glacier girls
Steve Hamel Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 3 months AGO
Two days after ending a losing streak dating back to Oct. 16, 2010, the Glacier girls soccer team knows what a winning streak feels like.
Glacier (2-4) followed up Thursday’s 4-0 win over Missoula Hellgate with a 3-1 home victory over Missoula Big Sky (0-4-1) on Saturday to win consecutive games for the first time in three years.
“We were in a losing slump and we forgot what it felt like to win,” Glacier senior Zoe Breeding said. “Now that we’ve won again I think it’s going to keep happening for us.”
Glacier got off to a slow start as the Big Sky defense aggressively marked center forward Kendall Halliburton, but that strategy gave Glacier’s other players more room to operate in the second half when the Wolfpack began distributing the ball to the wings.
As Glacier used more of the available space in its offensive third, goals followed.
The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute when Jaymee Siler made a run down the left flank and sent a left-footed cross toward the Big Sky goal. Siler’s pass nicked the inside of the near post and bounced onto the foot of Breeding, who buried it from point-blank range.
Getting the first goal seemed to lift the spirits of the Wolfpack, which scored again two minutes later. Abbe Breeding played a long ball over the top of the Big Sky defense to Zoe, who took one dribble and beat the Big Sky keeper with a strike to the upper-left corner of the net.
“That first goal gave us momentum,” Zoe said. “Once we got that first goal, everyone wanted to keep the lead.”
Big Sky answered in the 61st minute when Kayla McCampbell collected a deflection off a Glacier defender and found the back of the net, but Glacier controlled possession most of the final 20 minutes as it closed out the win.
The Wolfpack added its third goal with three minutes remaining when Sara Burch headed in a short cross by Madison Zirker.
Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said his team looked vastly different from the squad that started the season 0-4.
“They are a completely different team,” he said. “They feel like they deserve to win and they put in the work to do it. We had a tough beginning to our schedule and we’re excited to play those teams again.”
Neither team created many scoring chances in the first half. Glacier’s best opportunity came in the third minute when Halliburton played a through ball to Alysha Smith. Smith took one dribble to avoid Big Sky’s charging goalkeeper, but her shot was wide of the far post.
Big Sky’s best chance came in the 12th minute when Kennedy Pierce headed a cross over the bar.
“I think some of the players were still riding that we won 4-0 and were just a little overconfident,” Byrd said of the slow start. “We underestimated the power of Big Sky. They came out strong, fast and furious and we were a little on our heels. We corrected that pretty quick.”
Glacier will look to win its third straight game Thursday when it hosts Missoula Sentinel. The last time the Wolfpack won three consecutive games was Sept. 5-12, 2009, when it defeated Flathead, Helena High and Helena Capital.

Jake Lockwood’s 80th-minute equalizer allowed Glacier to snatch a draw from the Big Sky Eagles on a day the Wolfpack struggled to sustain offensive pressure.
Glacier (3-2-1) had trouble stringing together passes, but Glacier coach Ryan O’Rouke said he was proud of his team’s determination.
“They have a lot of tenacity, and the younger guys stepped it up in the second half,” O’Rourke said.
“Sometimes you have games like that where your skill breaks down across the field. A lot of guys were trying to make passes, but we just weren’t completing them.”
After opening the season 3-0, Glacier looked headed for its third straight loss before Lockwood’s strike netted the tying goal in the waning seconds. Knowing he was short on time, Glacier’s Tanner Maroney played a ball into the box from the left flank, Matt Peters stepped over the pass and Lockwood one-touched it into the net from the penalty spot 12 yards out.
“We didn’t give up and that showed,” Lockwood said. “We didn’t want to go into a midseason slump.”
Neither team had a significant edge in possession, and while he was happy to salvage a draw, Lockwood said the Wolfpack’s passing needs to be better in future games.
“We were trying to play more of a direct game and we couldn’t weigh our passes correctly,” he said. “We’d send them too long or they’d get trapped up in the defense’s feet.”
Big Sky (0-1-4) led 2-0 after goals in the 8th and 37th minutes, but Lockwood intercepted a throw-in seconds before half time and played a long ball to Tommy Briner, who beat the Big Sky goalkeeper to the far post.
Big Sky regained its two-goal edge six minutes into the second half when Alex Kowachek headed in a ricochet off a corner kick.
Glacier turned up its offensive pressure after conceding its third goal, but didn’t break down Big Sky’s defense until the 59th minute when Kade Deleray finished a cross from Brandon Purdy on the counter attack. After a turnover at midfield, Deleray emerged with the ball and played it into the left corner. Purdy sent a cross back into the middle to Dereray, who scored to cut the Wolfpack deficit to one.
Glacier kept the pressure on Big Sky the final 20 minutes, but the Eagles cleared each Glacier cross until Lockwood scored the equalizer.
