POST FALLS - Kelcie Hedge had a goal and two assists as the Post Falls Trojans beat the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 3-1 on Tuesday to win their first 5A Inland Empire League girls soccer championship in school history and No. 1 seed to the Region 1 tournament starting Oct. 4.

"This was a huge step for the team," Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. "It was one of our goals this year to get over that hurdle. Our goal was to get into the postseason with the No. 1 seed and we were able to keep their focus despite injuries and setbacks and keep a clear path."

Sadie Schmeling had a goal and an assist for Post Falls (7-5, 5-1 5A IEL), which hosts Sandpoint on Saturday.

"The girls came together as a team today," Anderson said. "I've always said we need our freshman class to step up and be part of the game and in doing that, we need the upper class to embrace them and that's been happening the last three games. As long as they're on, we're on."

Becca Brendis scored an unassisted goal in the 30th minute for Coeur d'Alene (2-6-1, 1-2-1), which travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

Meghan Pagano scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute.

"We were better than they were today. Their opportunities came from our mistakes," said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti, who also felt Sundquist was the difference. "She made a lot of great saves and a lot of good decisions."

"When they came out and scored on us, it was a moment for everybody - we're going to be in a dogfight," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "They just had to work through some of their own nerves and get down to business and play our game."
