With the return to school, there will also be a return to school sports. These sports provide positive physical fitness, as well as promote coordination, self-discipline and teamwork. They also increase the likelihood of athletic injury.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, "Each year, more than 3.5 million sport-related injuries in children under age 15 are treated." Because your child's bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments are still growing, they are more susceptible to injury than adults.

The most common source for injuries in young athletes is overuse! This often occurs if the athlete steps up to a higher level, plays multiple sports, or plays through pain or discomfort. Overuse injuries are a series of smaller injuries that can cause minor fractures, muscle tears or progressive bone deformities.

Proper preparation, training and coaching are the ideal preventative measures to avoid injury. In the event and injury does occur, get treatment as soon as possible! This will prevent the condition from worsening or causing permanent damage. In addition, physical therapy is a proven method for treating athletic injuries. Physical therapy speeds patient recovery. It also assists in making the athletes stronger, faster and more resistant to injury in the future.
