Fishing still plentiful on area lakes

Blueback herring are biting in Lake Coeur d'Alene, said Dan Pierce with Fins and Feathers Tackle Shop and Guide Service.

"The whole north end of the lake is good right now," Pierce said.

The blueback range between 9 and 12 inches, he said. He recommended using a spinner with a wedding ring.

Pike are still congregating in bays on the lake, Pierce added.

They're chomping on spinnerbaits, he said.

Fishermen can also snag chinook from Lake Coeur d'Alene, he said, by using 8-inch flashers with mini squids.

"They're all over the lake," Pierce said.

Rainbow trout are also popular to fish these days in Hauser and Fernan lakes, he said.

He suggested using a nightcrawler off the bottom, or Powerbait.

"Off the shores, off the boat trolling, either is good," Pierce said.

Kokanee fishing is superb this time of year.

Anglers should have luck for most of the fall catching them on Lake Coeur d'Alene, said Tina Padgitt of Black Sheep Sporting Goods.

"Kokanee is hot," she said this week.

Troll the lake at sunrise at depths of roughly 30 feet, dragging a line with a rubber snubber and a red and silver wedding ring for the best results. You can add up to an ounce of weight to the line, too.

"I'll go a couple more weeks to a month," Padgitt said of the action.

More than kokanee fishing is still out there.

Small and largemouth bass can be yanked from Lake Fernan. Use rubber patterns, while Senko worms were good ways to catch them around the lily pads during the summer. It's not as active as it was during the summer, though anglers are still having luck out there, Padgitt said.

Crappies can be pulled around the Benewah Lake, near the trestle. Load lines with crappie jigs and crappie nibbles.

Kokanee fishing on Lake Coeur d'Alene continues to go well, said Steve Holweg of Cabela's.

"A lot are being caught on the north end from Arrow Point down to Mineral Ridge and Wolf Lodge Bay," Holweg said. "Try cow bells, Ford Fenders or dodgers with wedding rings tipped with maggots and corn."

The fish are running between 15 to 35 feet deep.

"One guy who caught a couple males said their mouths are starting to hook, but they haven't started changing colors yet," Holweg said.

Trout and bass fishing is also going well on area lakes.

"A lot of guys are sticking with worms because that allows them to catch catfish as well," Holweg said. "Others like throwing small crank baits to pick up bass."

Some anglers are starting to gear up for steelhead fishing on the Clearwater and Snake rivers.

Holweg said there have been mixed reports on how good steelhead fishing will be.

"If you look at numbers for individual dams, they're close to seasonal averages," he said.

Holweg said many anglers are caught between whether to go fishing another time or two or turn to hunting, but there's still a lot of great fall fishing to be had on area lakes and streams.
