POST FALLS - The Kootenai County Historic Preservation Commission is going hands-on with history.
The commission is planning to hold archeological excavations involving the public starting next spring or summer.
"We need to preserve our history and this is a way of doing it," said Syd Albright, commission member.
The purpose is to increase awareness and appreciation of historical roots in the community. Interested locals, especially youth, will be encouraged to participate in the digs.
The commission is currently holding "survey parties" with metal detectors at various possible sites, including along the old Mullan Trail at Q'emiln Park in Post Falls, in preparation for the digs.
Albright said the commission will coordinate with local authorities, property owners, historical societies and museums for permission on the sites.
Commission member Keith Hutcheson will serve as a liaison with the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. Hutcheson is the former police chief for the Tribe.
The commission has also requested that Barry McHugh, the county's prosecutor, give advice on legal implications.
"Wherever it is, we'll get permission and it will all be done legally and professionally," said Albright, adding that grids and maps will be used for the excavations.
Commission member Colleen Allison is pursuing grant options to fund a documentary on the program.
"The plan is to set up a history speakers' bureau to show this documentary and it can all be part of the local history record," Albright said.
Certificates of participation will be given to each member of the excavation team.
"This will give students something to add to their resumes as they look for work," Albright said. "We want to encourage young involvement so they have an appreciation for their heritage."
Artifacts found will be placed in museums.
Those interested in the excavation project or who have possible sites in mind can email Albright at silverflix@roadrunner.com.
