The Wyoming football program is in a place the Idaho Vandals would love to be someday soon.

And no, we're not talking about the Cowboys' 0-3 record.

We're talking about the Mountain West Conference, which Idaho has openly campaigned to join, but has been rebuffed by the league, saying there are not enough TV sets in the Vandals' viewing area to make Idaho an attractive addition.

Idaho can't do much about its number of viewers, but it can once again prove it can play with teams in that conference, starting today when Wyoming visits the Kibbie Dome in Moscow to take on the Vandals (0-3).

"Yeah, it's a conference that we'd be interested in - we've had good success against that conference," Idaho coach Robb Akey said.

Under Akey, the Vandals have split with Mountain West foes Colorado State and San Diego State, and defeated UNLV.

But for right now, the Vandals are more concerned about the present, and taking the encouraging things from their three losses and hoping they lead to their first win of the season.

Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith sat out last week’s game after getting knocked out against Toledo the week before. If Smith doesn’t play today, the Cowboys would likely turn to Colby Kirkegaard, who was 15 of 23 for 123 yards against Cal Poly last week.

Wyoming also might be without wide receiver Robert Herron, who missed the last two games with a shin injury after catching five passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns vs. Texas.

Today is Idaho’s annual Military Appreciation Day, with special kudos going to those who served in Vietnam on this 50th anniversary of the start of that war. Also, the nine individuals and one team who were inducted into the Vandal Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday night will be honored.
