Airport evacuated over grenade scare

A woman who attempted to fly out of Glacier Park International Airport with three inactive hand grenades in her baggage prompted an evacuation of the airport for about an hour Sunday afternoon.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said the woman was flying internationally and purchased the inert grenades at a local military surplus store to use as props for a Halloween party.
“They were placed in her checked baggage. When it was screened by TSA, they were of course seen on X-ray,” Curry said. “You can imagine how excited everybody got. They evacuated the airport.”
Evergreen Fire Rescue responded to the airport along with sheriff’s deputies. The airport terminal was evacuated for about an hour starting at about 4:30 p.m., Curry said.
“We interviewed the lady and determined she purchased them from a military surplus store,” Curry added. “They were found to be inert. ... It’s not sound judgment, but she certainly didn’t put anything in there with the intent of making TSA think they were real.”
Curry said the woman was not charged with any crime and therefore she is not being identified.
