Novels and nonfiction are up for discussion at October’s book club meetings.

The Flathead County Library Book Club meets at 5 p.m. Oct. 9 to discuss Erik Larson’s “In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin.”

In this readable narrative, the author offers a real-life eyewitness perspective inside the Nazi hierarchy as Adolf Hitler came to power in the years preceding World War II.

The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the main Kalispell library’s conference room. For additional information, contact Marylane Pannell at 257-5793 or kuhlpan@cyberport.net.

The Flathead Valley Community College Reading Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 to discuss the novel “State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett.

The novel follows Dr. Marina Singh, a research scientist sent to Brazil to track down her former mentor, who disappeared in the Amazon while working on a valuable new drug. The last person who searched for the missing scientist died in the attempt.

The discussion group, which meets monthly, is open to the public. The only cost involved is the purchase of the books.

For more information or to sign up, call Sharon Randolph at 756-3981.

The Montana History Book Club will discuss “Montana’s Home Front During World War II” by Gary Glynn at its October meeting.

The book is a compelling account of Montana’s contribution to the war effort. It includes personal stories, local politics, industry, agriculture, education, sports and social life during the upheaval of a worldwide conflict.

The book club meets monthly in the basement conference room in the basement conference room at the Museum at Central School in downtown Kalispell. This month’s meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

Books are available for purchase at the museum gift shop.

For additional information, call 756-8381.

The Bad Rock Book Discussion Group meets at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Bad Rock Books in Columbia Falls to discuss “The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East,” by Sandy Tolan.

This is a book with a new perspective on the Palestinian-Israeli conundrum, beginning with a shared tree.

Treats are provided. Everyone is welcome.

For more information, call Carol Rocks at the book store 892-0515.
