RATHDRUM - Alex Opland scored off a corner kick in the 75th minute from 19 yards out to give the Lakeland Hawks a 1-0 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs on Thursday at Corbit Field to clinch their first 4A Inland Empire League championship in program history and an automatic berth to the Region 1 tournament title game.

"The ball just popped out to his foot and he shot it and it went in," first-year Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. "He was just in the right spot at the right time. Both teams came out and played really, really hard. It was a very physical game."

Sandpoint and Moscow will play in a semifinal match Oct. 8 at regionals, with that winner traveling to Lakeland for the title game Oct. 10.

"At the very beginning of the season, we asked what our goals were and the first one was to get back to state," Craig said. "This year, to be able to play the one game, we're really excited to have it at home. This is what we wanted to do."

Cade Coffey had seven saves for Lakeland (7-6-1, 3-0 4A IEL), which travels to Lewiston on Tuesday.

Sandpoint is 7-5-2, 1-2.

COEUR d'ALENE - Tanner Horton had five saves for the Timberwolves and Noah Gondo had three saves for the Trojans as the teams played to a scoreless tie in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

With the tie, Post Falls (11-1-1, 4-1-1 5A IEL) needs Lake City (5-4-3, 1-2-1) to beat Coeur d'Alene (8-3-3, 4-1) in another 5A IEL match on Saturday for the Trojans to claim the No. 1 seed to next week's Region 1 tournament. Lake City has Saturday's match, as well as one at Lewiston on Monday remaining on its regular season schedule.

"It was a great game," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "We kind of threw a monkey wrench into things and didn't help anyone sort things out for next week, but that's OK. It was a great match. It was a clean, hard-fought game and it was our senior night, so we would have liked to have gotten a win, but it didn’t happen.”

Post Falls travels to Moscow on Saturday.

First half — none. Second half — none.

MOSCOW — Graison Le scored on an assist from Kevin Hampson in the 62nd minute as the Vikings defeated the Bears in a nonleague match at Moscow Junior High.

“Kevin just played him a diagonal ball through the defense and Graison put it in from 12 yards out,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “We’re pretty happy with how they played. We didn’t have a couple of starters and came out a little flat in the first half, but we had some urgency in the second half and finished the game strong.”

Coeur d’Alene (8-3-3) hosts Lake City on Saturday in a key 5A Inland Empire League match. With a win, Coeur d’Alene can clinch the top seed into next week’s Region 1 tournament. A tie or loss gives the top seed to Post Falls.
