RATHDRUM - Lakeland won its homecoming football game on Friday night.

Cade Coffey - who also plays soccer at Lakeland - kicked a 45-yard field goal as time expired and the Lakeland Hawks defeated the Post Falls Trojans 17-14 in a nonleague game at Corbit Field.
"We knew Cade had a leg and he works hard," Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. "We don't always see him at practice because he plays soccer, but he comes in after practices and works hard on kicking with his dad. He puts a lot of time into kicking and is becoming a clutch guy - and we really appreciate having him out there."
On Thursday, Coffey didn't allow a goal against Sandpoint - helping the Hawks clinch their first 4A Inland Empire League soccer championship.
Friday - he increased Lakeland's win streak to three games and snapped a four-game losing skid to Post Falls in the Battle of the Prairie.
"I was trying not to think about anything," Coffey said. "I wasn't thinking about the crowd or anything, just making the kick. It means a lot right now. All the hard work and camps over the summer - they really paid off."
Post Falls (1-4) took a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the game as Michael McKeown took a play-action pass from Joey Pfennigs 80 yards for a touchdown.
"It was a good ball and great protection from our offensive line," Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz said. "It was a great catch."
The Trojans increased the lead to 14-0 after the first quarter on a 24-yard pass from Pfennigs to Ryan Morris.
"It was a good battle," Hinz said. "It stinks to lose, but we had our opportunities to get first downs and put the game away late. We need to keep moving forward and work on finishing ball games."
Lakeland (3-2) hosts Colville next Friday.
"This is huge for us," Kiefer said. "We came off a rough win last week. We won, but didn't play our best football and I think we gained a little momentum heading into the home stretch. It was a big win - homecoming night - and to win it like that was amazing."
Troy Carr had touchdown runs of 6 and 10 yards to get Lakeland back into the game.
“I think we need to keep improving,” Kiefer said. “I think our kids need to keep getting tougher and know their assignments and keep the progression going.”
Post Falls will return to 5A Inland Empire League play against Coeur d’Alene next Friday at Trojan Stadium.
“We keep improving each week,” Hinz said. “The kids fought hard for four quarters, but we just didn’t come out on the right side of the scoreboard.”
