QUINCY - Former nurse Ingrid Huffman is bringing a new approach to health and wellness to the residents of Quincy.

Huffman opened the Blue Winds Wellness Center on Monday, providing customers with natural methods of healing as an alternative to Western medicine.

Blue Winds specializes in traditional herbal remedies, aromatherapy and other natural healing methods.

"You go to the doctor and 15 minutes later, you leave and don't know what's going on," Huffman said. "I'm going back to traditional and old time sources of healing."

Huffman said she believes the body has the ability to heal itself without medicine, and her holistic approach to understanding the body, mind and soul is the key.

Huffman also offers Reiki therapy, which is a form of stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.

Huffman spent 20 years in the healthcare industry, and said she wanted to open her own business after talking with combat veterans who were frustrated with current healthcare. As a combat veteran herself, Huffman said she wasn't always satisfied with modern medicine and therapy.

She spent some time studying native American rituals and herbal remedies from other traditions in order to find a way to do what modern medicine couldn't. Huffman then decided to open a wellness center so she could help other people find alternatives to healing.

"I'm pioneering a new concept here in the area," she said, "And I'm bringing healing back to simplicity."

Huffman develops her own herbal products and will start selling naturalskin care products, candles for aromatherapy and chemical-free remedies.

In addition to alternative medicine, Huffman said Blue Winds provides karate classes and personal training services.

Armando Martinez, has studied and practiced martial arts for 25 years. He holds a black belt in karate and also specializes in mixed martial arts.

"Fitness fits in with the center's mission, of total physical wellness," said Huffman.

Huffman said she is offering an initial free consultation for new customers. Reiki therapy rates are $25 an hour.

Karate classes are offered at $55 a month.
