Recounting the trials and tribulations of young romance, the Flathead High School theater department will present William Shakespeare’s charming comedy, “Love’s Labour’s Lost” April 11, 12 and 13.
Show time is 7 p.m. all three nights in the David M. Hashley Theatre at Flathead High. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children, students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the school’s main office, Photo Video Plus and The Bookshelf.
King Ferdinand and his three friends swear off romance to devote themselves to three years of study. No women will be allowed within a mile of court. That’s the plan, anyway, in the court of old Navarre. But no sooner has their solemn oath been taken than four lovely ladies from France arrive on a diplomatic mission.
And so begins the timeless conflict of the head versus the heart. Disguise, deception and mischief abound as the heart proves stronger than the mind. Mix in the comedic shenanigans of the local villagers who perform an unforgettable pageant for the royals, and you have one of Shakespeare's most beloved comedies.
“This is a fun-loving romantic comedy,” director April Walker said. “Songs, love-letter writing and sword play come into the romance and playful banter of the colorful cast.”
To complement the romantic atmosphere of this Shakespearean classic, a minstrel troupe has been added to the cast of characters. Throughout the show, there are several opportunities for this minstrel troupe to interact with the cast as well as perform in the background of the scenes.
“Once I noticed how musical this show was intended to be, I decided to add the minstrel troupe to the auditions. Luckily I had some real talent show up, which enabled me to add more music to the play,” Walker said. “It's amazing how much music can enhance any production, and whenever possible I try to add in some unexpected musical moments to bring the show together.”
The original Shakespearean script has been cut down to maximize on audience enjoyment.
“With the shorter script we have been able to focus on the playful moments, the active scenes, and add minstrel songs throughout the performance,” Walker said.
The cast of “Love’s Labour’s Lost” includes Danny Power, Karl Boveng, Garth West, Jake Wilson, Katie Keller, Brittany Kretski, Kendra Anderson, Jade LeGassey, Jackson Davey, Alex Weaver, Caleb Keller, Quinten Graham, Elijah Katchur, Kristina Vinogradova, Zacharia Timm, Austin Hinkle and Jay Shonsey.
The Traveling Minstrel Group includes Elijah Katchur, Micah Moore, Judah Justine, Austin Hinkle, Eric Hogan and Catie Henderson.
Behind the scenes, Cassi Boozell, Laina Mothershead, Beki Hafemeyer, Catie Hendersen, Jenna Wilke, Brooke Wahlert make up the stage, sound and lighting crew.
