COEUR d'ALENE - Kelsey LaVaute hit four home runs, including two three-run shots in the first game, as the North Idaho College Cardinals swept the Skagit Valley Fighting Cardinal of Mt. Vernon, Wash., 11-1 and 17-1 in a nonconference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Memorial Field.

In the second game, sophomore catcher Shelby Carter hit her 31st home run of her NIC career - a 3-run homer in the second inning - breaking the career record previously set by Shelby Gonzales in 2011. Carter also hit a three-run double in the third inning for NIC (14-23), which hosts Southern Nevada on Friday in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.

"It was a good midweek game for us," NIC coach Don Don Williams said. "With Southern Nevada coming in on Friday, we're right in the middle with them, so we'll need to come out and play well against them."

Southern Nevada (20-21, 13-17) is in fourth in the seven-team SWAC, and NIC (9-15 SWAC) is in fifth.
