Chiefs routed in Game 1 of Western semifinals

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks broke away from a 2-all tie with five unanswered goals in the final two periods en route to a 7-2 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in Game 1 of their Western Hockey League Western Conference semifinal series Friday night before 6,172 at Memorial Coliseum.

Game 2 is tonight at 7 at the Rose Garden.

Ty Rattie scored a natural hat trick for Portland, accounting for all the scoring in the third period. He now has a WHL playoff-high nine goals. Oliver Bjorkstrand scored two goals in a three-goal second period for the Winterhawks.

Spokane gave Portland eight power-play opportunities, and the Winterhawks, tops in the league, scored on two of them. The Chiefs were 0 for 3 on the power play.

Mike Aviani's fourth goal of the playoffs, 9:04 into the game, tied it at 1 for Spokane. Todd Fiddler scored a shorthanded goal for the Chiefs to tie it at 2 7:23 into the second period.

Spokane outshot Portland 40-39. The Chiefs had 50 penalty minutes on 17 infractions; the Winterhawks had 18 penalty minutes on nine infractions.
