Flathead’s Emma Andrews, Kwyn Johnson and Rhiannon Sturgess each set state qualifying marks at their season-opening track and field dual with Great Falls C.M. Russell Saturday at Legends Stadium.

Wind and intermittent rain made for tough conditions, but Andrews won the long jump and high jump with state qualifying marks and was 2 1/2 inches shy of the Class AA qualifying standard in the triple jump. Johnson and Sturgess set qualifying marks in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles, respectively.

As a team, the Flathead girls lost to CMR 79-62. The competition was much closer for the boys, with Flathead winning 73-72.

While Johnson and Sturgess were both participants at last year’s state meet — Johnson won the triple jump and Sturgess was seventh in the 100 hurdles — injuries kept Andrews from qualifying, making her fast start this season all the more satisfying.

She cleared 5-1 in the high jump, her first event of the afternoon, and improved with each attempt at the long jump, matching the qualifying standard of 16-6 on her second jump of the preliminary round and jumping 17-0 in the finals.

“Definitely to qualify for long jump was the major (goal),” Andrews said. “For high jump, I had cleared qualifying standards in practice so I wanted to try for that too.

“I’m feeling healthy so anything can happen.”

Flathead girls coach Tom Gillespie estimated half his athletes missed the meet because they were away on spring break, but those who were present performed well.

“The kids that were here, they really worked hard,” he said. “I think it was a good experience for the kids that were here for spring break to be able to have this meet. CMR is talented so it was definitely a good first meet for us.”

Johnson easily won the triple jump, exceeding 37 feet three out of six jumps, with a long of 37-8 1/2.

“I was really hoping for 38, but on a day like today that doesn’t necessarily happen,” Johnson said. “A high of 37 for me was good and I think I can just keep improving from here.”

Johnson also ran second to Sturgess in the 100 hurdles, missing the 16.2-second qualifying standard by .12 seconds. Sturgess’ time of 16.05 seconds ensured she’ll compete in the 100 hurdles at the state meet for the third straight year.

“That’s a weight off my shoulders,” Sturgess said.

“I started out fast and I maintained my speed through the whole thing. I hit that second-to-last hurdle and that slowed me down, but I recovered fairly well, so I’m happy about that.”

Sturgess also won the 300 hurdles, but was 1.88 seconds over the state qualifying standard.

Flathead’s Dani Davis ran second to CMR’s Anna Weber in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Weber, the defending state champion in both events, was first out of the blocks, but Davis closed the gap down the stretch of both races, finishing the 100 in 13.19 and the 200 in 28.24.

“It was a great way to meet up (with Weber) before state,” Davis said. “It was really fun and exciting.”

Flathead’s Katie Weed was also a winner, throwing the javelin 102-6 to beat Weber by a foot.

The Flathead boys were without state placers Zach Perrin, Matt Quist and Matthew Tokarz, and coach Dan Hodge said over half his team was absent.

While none of Flathead’s boys set state qualifying marks, Kevin Grosswiler, Jake Egley and Chade Gonter each won two individual events and Grosswiler and Egley were members of Flathead’s winning 400-meter relay.

“For those boys that showed up and competed, I thought they competed at a varsity level,” Hodge said. “They competed hard. They weren’t just there to run the race and they weren’t just there to get in a workout. They wanted to do the best they could.”

Grosswiler blew away the field in the 400, beating CMR’s Daryl Williams by 1.09 seconds with a time of 53.88. He received stiffer competition in the 200, beating teammate Easton Johnson by .25 seconds with a time of 24.33.

“He’s starting off where he left off last year,” Hodge said of Grosswiler.

“He had a good winter, he worked hard. I do an indoor plyometric program and he was there all the time.”

Egley won the 100 and the 300 hurdles and Gonter took first in the high jump and 110 hurdles. Gage Marcum and Caleb McCracken placed first in the shot put and discus, respectively.

Flathead hosts the Class A Invitational Tuesday at Legends Stadium.
