POST FALLS - A 24-year-old Chattaroy, Wash., woman was arrested on charges for assaulting a police officer and drug possession on Interstate 90 near the state line Friday afternoon.
Maria Schlienger was arrested by Idaho State Police on charges for DUI, possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia, obstructing, driving while suspended and assaulting a police officer.
ISP responded at 1:35 p.m. when Schlienger was reportedly unconscious in the driver's side of a parked vehicle along eastbound I-90 near milepost 1.
When a Post Falls officer arrived to assist ISP for what appeared to be a medical emergency, two ISP troopers were attempting to remove Schlienger from the vehicle, but she was combative and allegedly had a knife in her hand, according to a police report.
An ISP trooper took the knife from Schlienger and tossed it during the altercation, striking the windshield of a PFPD patrol car, according to police.
Schlienger allegedly continued to resist officers while on the ground and was warned that she would tased with a stun gun if she didn't cooperate. After she didn't cooperate, a Post Falls officer then tased her, but it didn't appear to have an effect at first, police said.
Eventually, however, Schlienger's hands became free and other officers were able to detain her in handcuffs. The officer who applied the stun gun wrote in his report that he didn't realize at the time the woman no longer had the knife.
"She tucked her hands under her stomach, and I still believed she had the knife as I did not hear anyone advise if it was secure," the report stated. "She was also still actively resisting officers on scene and led me to believe she could still be in possession of a weapon."
Schlienger was transported to Kootenai Medical Center by Kootenai County Fire and Rescue for evaluation before she was booked into jail. Police were not seriously hurt during the alleged altercation.
