Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon to a head-on crash on U.S. 93 Alternate Route west of Kalispell.

The collision near the Ashley Creek bridge on the bypass involved a full-size Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Subaru Outback station wagon.

Extensive extrication efforts — including cutting off the roof of the vehicle — were required before the badly injured driver of the Subaru could be freed and taken to the hospital.

The accident shut down traffic on the southern end of the bypass.
