The Loggers track program didn’t have an ideal opening weekend, as they were forced to compete in what Head Coach Jim May lightly referred to as monsoon conditions.

The individual results weren’t top-notch, but May said track and field is an end-game sport anyway.

“Everything in track is looking toward May,” May said. “It’s trying to be the best at divisionals.”

The first, rainy meet in Columbia Falls resulted in a few Libby athletes scoring, including some who May said will make an impact when they get into mid-season form.

Senior Barak Lapka cleared 10-feet-5 in pole vault for sixth place, just an inch behind Polson’s Dylan Kelley. Jonathan Miller finished in sixth place at 12:05.8 in the 3,200-meter run. Errik Westlund, still perfecting the three-step, finished in sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles at 18. 21.

For the ladies, stellar freshman Krysten Mossburg finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:53.2. The girls 1,600 -meter relay earned a third-place finish as well, right in front of the Polson relay team.

Elly Webster, a senior Swiss army knife for the ladies, missed the first meet, but will contribute with the 100 and 200-meter dash, as well as the triple and high jumps.

Senior Danny Leggins, splitting time between track and tennis, ran a 5:15.61 for his first 1,600-meter run, good enough for sixth place.

May said his seniors will carry the team while the younger athletes improve.
