MATTAWA - National Alcohol Screening Day is an outreach screening program that raises awareness about alcohol misuse and refers individuals with alcohol problems for further treatment. This is the 11th year of the program.

"We want people to realize that alcohol abuse and alcoholism is a recognized disorder which can be treated," said CBHA Behavioral Health Consultant Angelica Lauriano.

Lauriano says that problems with alcohol can increase over time. "All of a sudden people find that one drink leads to another and yet another," she said. "In no time they need a drink just to get through the day."

These free screenings can help increase awareness that there is a problem. Participants in the screening will be asked to fill out a questionnaire that is scored to show if there is evidence of a problem. If the results are positive, the clinic will refer them to places to get help.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wahluke Family Clinic on Thursday, April 11th, includes informational pamphlets and brochures; counselors will be available to discuss any questions or concerns.

In some cases, it is a friend or family member of the person who has an issue with alcohol that is in need of information regarding alcohol abuse.

In such cases, professional advice is given on how to approach this other person's problem.

Lauriano stressed that all information given is confidential. "We have held this event for a number of years," she concluded, "Awareness is increasing and more people are recognizing the warning signs and seeking treatment."
