EPHRATA - A date may be set May 6 for a hearing to determine whether a 14-year-old Moses Lake boy who allegedly shot his mother and father should be tried as an adult.

Both prosecution and defense attorneys asked for more time at a hearing to determine progress in the case Monday afternoon.

Defense attorney Lyliane Couture said she needed more time to find witnesses, a position echoed by Grant County Deputy Prosecutor Kevin McCrae, who said the prosecution also needed time to compile a witness list.

Douglas Anderson, acting as judge pro tem, said he anticipated that and scheduled another status hearing for May 6 at Grant County Juvenile Court in Ephrata.

The boy was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, with bail set at $500,000.

The boy allegedly took an unloaded .22 caliber pistol from a locked gun case the night of March 8, loaded it, walked into his parents' bedroom and shot them, according to courts documents. The boy was allegedly angry with them over being grounded from video games and electronic devices.

Both the boy's mother, Elizabeth Brooks, 39, and father, Jonothan Brooks, 38, survived the shooting and were transported to an out-of-area hospital. Skip Bennett, pastor of the church the family attends, said the family asked that no updates be given on their conditions.
