Track: Second meet, better show

Whitefish’s Sarah Latcham went into the 800-meter run on Tuesday at the Class A Invitational at Legends Stadium with a plan.
“I had a good strategy,” she said.
Which was ... hold back a little on the opening lap, let other runners set the pace.
In this case, there were two ahead of her.
“That was good,” the sophomore said.
“I’m a young runner. I wanted someone else to lead the race. I was happy to have someone do my work for me ... set the pace.”
Then, when the time was right — with 100 meters left — she made her move.
“I was going to do it a little earlier,” she said of her final push.
“I like to sprint ... it’s what I do. I just like to see the finish line getting closer and closer. That keeps me going.”
The end result was a victory and a time of 2:42.04.
Latcham last year ran just a few 800s while she focused most of her attention on the 100, 200 and 400. But after running cross country last fall, she’s now made the move fulltime to the 800.
“I like the 800,” she said.
“I really do.”
Lathcham opened the season with a second-place finish in the 800 at the Columbia Falls Invitational with a time of 2:41.60.
“In the hail and rain,” she said of that race.
“That was a tough one.”
Conditions, although chilly on Tuesday, were much more tolerable.
“This race was more about strategy,” she said.
“I was also hoping for the low 2:30s.”
This meet also had better results for another athlete.
Flathead pole vaulter Dylan Creek no-heighted in Saturday’s season-opening dual with Great Falls C.M. Russell. The senior rebounded in style from that disappointment by clearing 13-0 on Tuesday to finish first.
Creek had three attempts at 13-6, his best effort coming on his final try.
“I felt I was over it,” he said of the crossbar.
“I could see it. I just nicked it off on my thigh.”
Creek opened at 12-0 Tuesday, a height he failed to clear on Saturday.
He followed that by making 12-6 and 13-0 on his first attempts.
“I was on a smaller pole (Saturday),” he said of failure at 12-0.
“After my third attempt, I went to my bigger pole and cleared it (on a practice vault).”
Doing that was a big plus for this meet.
“I just thought of having fun,” he said
“I’d like to qualify (for state) the next meet (by clearing 13-6) and not having to stress out about it for the rest of the season.”
Creek had a personal best height of 13-6 last year and qualified for state. He no-heighted at state.
“I feel pretty good this season,” he said.
“Hopefully I won’t no-height ever again.”
Creek has cleared 14-0 in practice and is aiming for 14-6 by season’s end.
“My goal since my freshman year has been to try to break the school record,” he said.
“We’ll see how it goes.”
Ten teams competed in the invitational. There were two double winners on both sides.
Polson’s Riley Sampson won the discus (137-11) and shot put (48-9) and Glacier’s Kyle Griffith had the best distances in the triple jump (44-9 1/4) and long jump (21-7 3/4).
For the girls, Flathead’s Dani Davis won the 100 (13.11) and long jump (16-6) and Glacier’s Corrine Hamilton had firsts in the 1,600 (5:48.31) and 3,200 (12:35.77).
