SPOKANE - Mac Carruth stopped 30 shots as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 5-0 to sweep their best-of-7 Western Hockey League Western Conference semifinal series on Wednesday night in front of 4,012 at the Spokane Arena.
Portland advances to the Western Conference finals to face the Kamloops Blazers starting April 19 in Portland.
It is the second straight season the Winterhawks and Blazers will go head-to-head in the playoffs.
It is the third time in four years Portland has ousted Spokane from the playoffs.
Portland opened a 2-0 lead after the first period and extended the advantage to 3-0 on Ty Rattie's 11th goal of the playoffs - a postseason high in the WHL - scoring on the power play 1:42 into the second on an assist from Brendan Leipsic.
Joey Baker and Taylor Leier capped the scoring with third-period goals for Portland.
Eric Williams had 30 saves for Spokane, which was swept for the first time in a playoff series since 2004 against Everett.
Spokane scored only three goals in the series' four games, including one over the final 10 periods.
