PULLMAN - Quarterbacks Austin Apodaca and Connor Halliday combined to throw five touchdown passes while the defense picked off three passes and recorded five sacks in Washington State's first full scrimmage of the spring Saturday at Martin Stadium.

Following a special teams segment, the Cougars scrimmaged for over 100 plays in front of a couple hundred fans in Martin Stadium.

Halliday, son of former Coeur d'Alene High quarterback Duane Halliday, went 25 of 36 for 249 yards and three touchdowns while Apodaca went 19 of 34 for 228 yards and two touchdowns but also threw three interceptions. Apodaca also recorded a 30-yard run and scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

Wide receiver Gabe Marks continued his impressive spring with a scrimmage-high 11 catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns while Kristoff Williams also caught two touchdown passes and finished the day with seven receptions for 97 yards. Bobby Ratliff came up with a couple big first down catches during his six-catch, 53-yard day. Rickey Galvin caught five passes for 48 yards, Kyle Adkins caught three passes including a 21-yard touchdown and running back Theron West led all rushers with six carries for 26 yards.

Kicker Andrew Furney got the offense on the board with a 42-yard field goal and fellow kicker Wes Concepcion later hit from 27 yards out. The first touchdown pass didn't come until midway through the scrimmage as the defense made a number of stops including the three interceptions early in the day. Halliday put the offense on the board after finding Adkins in the back left corner of the end zone for a 21-yard score. Halliday then capped the next series with a nine-yard pass to Kristoff Williams in a similar spot.

A couple series later, Apodaca finished off a drive with a perfectly thrown pass over the shoulder of Marks from three yards out for a score and followed with another scoring series with a touchdown strike to Williams who turned a quick screen into a 44-yard score after making one defender miss. The offense got on the board once more after Apodaca capped a drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak before Halliday finished off his day with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Marks who made the catch around the 15-yard line before breaking one tackle and scampering into the end zone.

The Cougar defense dominated most of the day until the offense closed the day with a couple touchdown drives. Linebacker Justin Sagote led all players with eight tackles while Eric Oertel tallied six tackles and an interception. Darryl Monroe posted five tackles, two for loss but made his presence felt throughout the day with a couple big hits, both in the backfield and in coverage, highlighted by a crushing hit on wideout Robert Lewis that broke up a pass. Darryl Paulo, Lyman Faoliu, Xavier Cooper, Max Hersey and Austin Brown all recorded "sacks." The Cougars also received interceptions from defensive back Beau Glover and safety Mitch Peterson who made a diving catch off a deflected pass to come up with a turnover.

The Cougars continue spring drills Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Rogers Field and in Martin Stadium.
