Jack Cleavinger of St. Maries, Idaho, known by most as “Handlebar," passed away peacefully April 10, 2013 at Pinewood Care Center after a long battle with emphysema. He was 76. Jack was born in Needles, Calif. on July 14, 1936. Jack’s character was truly defined by his handlebar mustache and derby hat. He rarely if ever was seen without either on trips around town or to the diner.

Handlebar worked as a log truck driver for many years for Larry Deary in St. Maries, Idaho as well as Craig, Alaska and even when he no longer drove, he still kept an eye on the truck yard keeping track of when the trucks would come and go.

Handlebar is survived by siblings Marvin Cleavinger, Joyce Strong, Judy Poirier,  and children: William Cleavinger, Rhonda Dussault, Beverly Gadberry, daughter-in-law Stacey Bretthauer, son-in-law Robert Dussault; and grandchildren: Mike, Maria, Rachel, Dan, Roxanne, David, Scott, Sheree; great-grandchildren: Peter, Sydney, Maveric, Jordan, Tanner, Naden and expected baby Gadberry, along with many nieces, nephews, and other family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father John Cleavinger, mother Audrey Newman, one brother Patrick Cleavinger and a sister Mary Brumbaugh.

Handlebar thoroughly loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and riding four-wheelers. One of the hardest parts of his life was giving those things up when his disease no longer allowed the exertion, but he was blessed with all the wonderful memories everyone in his life gave him. Thank you all!

At Handlebar’s request no service will be held. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
