The harmonious sounds of classical music could be heard coming from the Plains United Methodist Church on Monday as the Sanders County Arts Council hosted the Piatigorsky Foundation artists, Katharine Dain and Jeffrey Grossman.

With Grossman accompanying on piano, soprano Dain’s voice soared through the room, filling the hall with the sounds of Handel, Mozart, Schubert and Brahms. From show tunes in the Broadway musical “West Side Story” to classical pieces from contemporary composers such as Guastavino, the duo brought rich tone and passionate emotion to the music for an audience of about ten residents.

Dain has been reviewed by the New York Times and has performed in world famous venues including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center. Described by the New York Times as, “young, energetic and highly polished,” she holds degrees from Harvard University, the Guildhall School of Music and Mannes College of Music. Described by Fanfare magazine as a “sensitive and fluent accompanist” of “flair and conviction,” Grossman has a wide-ranging repertoire of talent on the piano, the harpsichord and as a conductor. He holds degrees from Harvard College, Carnegie Mellon University and The Julliard School.

The artists performed in Plains on behalf of the Piatigorsky Foundation, a non-profit organization whose stated purpose is to make live classical music part of everyday life for communities all over the United States. The foundation, established in 1990 in New York City by cellist Evan Drachman, will perform over 220 concerts in 18 states this season.
