COEUR d'ALENE - A 10.4-pound salmon hooked near Arrow Point last weekend won the Fins and Feathers Spring Chinook Derby on Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Dave Lawson took home the grand prize check of $1,500.

"There weren't a ton fish weighed in this year," said Jason Smith of Fins and Feathers. "Most of the fish that were caught were between 20-24 inches."

He said the minimum weigh-in length was 26 inches, and they only had about 10 fish that qualified.

The winning salmon was caught close to 30 feet below the surface, Smith estimated. The winner was trolling orange pack herring with a blue helmet.

While the winning fish was caught near the north end of the lake, most of the derby fish were caught on the southern end near English Point.

Smith said anglers are now gearing up for the Fins and Feathers Spring Pike Tournament on April 27-28. It is a two-angler team event.

Registrations fees are $50 per team and the prize money will depend on the number of entries. Last year the event drew more than 80 teams and paid out around $1,000 in prize money.

Smith said there will be prizes for the biggest fish that weighed in on each day, and the grand prize will go to the team with highest cumulative weight for the two days.

Each team will be limited to weighing in four fish per day, and the minimum length is 22 inches. The tournament is limited to the Lake Coeur d'Alene system, which includes all of Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Chain Lakes up to and including Killarney Lake.
