Idaho's No. 1 quarterback - at least heading into the fall - should be decided tonight when the Vandals hold their annual Silver and Gold Scrimmage at the Kibbie Dome (6 p.m., SWX).

Chad Chalich, the redshirt freshman out of Coeur d'Alene High, and senior Taylor Davis have gotten most of the work during spring practice. In three scrimmages, Chalich has completed 70 of 117 passes for 870 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions, and Davis is 45 of 81 for 627 yards, four TDs and four interceptions.

First-year Idaho coach Paul Petrino said he would name a No. 1 quarterback after spring ball - and that person would compete for the starting job this fall with Josh McCain, a junior college transfer who will be on campus then.

"Between the two of them, they've had up and down days," Petrino said of Chalich and Davis. "There were days when Chad looked really good ... and then there would be two or three days in a row when Taylor looked like he was coming along. We've got Josh coming in in the summer, and (high school senior Matt) Linehan coming in in the summer ... we'll see who can get us in the end zone the most."

Petrino told the Press in February he expected Linehan to redshirt this fall. Junior college transfer Anthony Neyer is also on the roster. The sixth quarterback on the roster, redshirt freshman Austin DeCoud, played safety in Idaho’s last two scrimmages of the spring.

Petrino said tonight’s scrimmage will mostly simulate game conditions, with four 15-minute quarters, timed like a real game. He’s hoping to get in as many as 200 plays.

Petrino said wide receiver Maurice Trotter has been the “biggest surprise” of the camp. Trotter has caught 14 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in the three scrimmages — including 13 for 221 and two TDs in the last two.

“He’s really stepped up and made plays for us,” Petrino said.

Petrino again praised the play of junior college running backs Jerrel Brown and Kris Olugbode, and said linebacker Marc Millan, a juco transfer, and sophomore defensive end Quinton Bradley have probably been the best two players on defense this spring.

“They both fly around, they both are playmakers,” Petrino said. “Marc always shows up in a bad attitude, hitting people, making plays and causing havoc, and Quinton has a great get-off, is getting after the quarterback all the time. Really, with the speed that they both play with, and the playmaking ability they both have, I just think those two guys are going to make a lot of plays for us next year.”
