COEUR d'ALENE - Think you're tougher than a Boy Scout?

Prove it, hot shot.

Scout-O-Rama, which takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, will give anybody a chance to go head-to-head with scouts when it comes to all-American outdoor skills.

So let's see what you got.

The annual bash includes a wide range of activities, demonstrations and an all-you-can-eat breakfast, but the "Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?" challenge will match the contestants up mano-e-mano, and all for a good cause.

"One of the great benefits is that all the money goes to supporting our local Boy Scout troops," said Mark Whitt, district training chair and Scout-O-Rama coordinator.

Scout-O-Rama will feature two multiple-rocket launches to match the "Rocket to the Future" theme. A limited supply of rocket kits will be available for about $6 on a first-come, first-served basis for those who want to build their own rockets and participate in the launches, which will occur from 11:30-2:30.

The event will have an emphasis on Scouting skills related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

"It's something that's really big in the schools these days," Whitt said.

He said that almost all the Boy Scout and Cub Packs in the area will be present, "so it's a great opportunity to sign up if you have a boy who is interested in joining the Scouting program." The main information booth will have applications as well as lists of Scout troops and their locations.

"It's a great opportunity to meet them in person," Whitt said.

Volunteers will begin serving the pancake breakfast at 8:30, followed by a flag ceremony at 9:50. Food for the breakfast will be donated by Ron and Randy McIntire of Super 1 Foods.

"They're big supporters of the Scouts," Whitt said. "We are very grateful to them."

Advance tickets can be purchased from any Scout or by calling the Scout office (208) 772-2455. They are $5 and include the all-you-can-eat breakfast, some two-for-one coupons from various sponsors and a coupon for $5 off groceries at Super 1. General admission the day of the event is $2 at the gate.
