COEUR d'ALENE - Two volunteer cleanup crews are coordinating efforts with the U.S. Forest Service to mount a cleanup of the Hayden Creek area on May 4.

Bob Balser said he is working to get two groups of the Young Marines and a number of volunteers together to start cleaning the lower reaches of Hayden Creek near the shooting range off Lancaster Road.

Meanwhile, Brian Bunch, a local insurance agent, is organizing a cleanup effort near the Ohio Match Road access point, and will work their way up to Forest Service Road 437.

The two contacted each other on Friday, and decided to coordinate their efforts.

Bunch said he and his father started the "Take Pride in Hayden Creek" cleanup last year. They hauled off eight pickup truck loads of trash out of the area.

"We were picking up old TVs and even a refrigerator that had been shot to bits," he said. "My dad and I came up with the idea because we really care about what's going on up there."

Bunch's group already has about five pickups, but they could always use more. Both Bunch and Balser said volunteers should be prepared by wearing gloves and proper work boots.

"We could also use some hand tools, rakes, and garbage bags," Bunch said.

Balser said he will be working with the forest service to provide some services, and coordinate the volunteers who have called into them to help with the cleanup efforts.

"We could still use more help though," he said, adding he may be able to work out a way to feed the volunteers as well, but he is still working that.

Bunch is planning to meet on the morning of Saturday, May 4, at his office at 9040 N. Hess in Hayden. They hope to depart for Hayden Creek at around 8:30 a.m. Call Bunch at (208) 659-5014 for more information.

Balser said he plans to meet with some of his volunteers in the Hayden Super One Foods parking lot (near the Goodwill drop off trailer). They hope to depart between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m., as well. Call Balser at (208) 691-0511.

Both of them said people familiar with area can meet them up at the cleanup sites later in the day if they can't leave at 8:30 a.m.
