Harriet Sara Coon, 87

Harriet Sara Coon, 87, of Coeur d'Alene, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Hospice House. She was born on July 13, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Jack and Anna (Mindel) Rose.

She attended grade school in Los Angeles and after the 1933 earthquake, the family moved to Benton Harbor, Mich. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Chicago, Ill., where she graduated from Austin High School in 1943. Upon graduation, Harriet worked in Chicago as a civilian for the U.S. Navy, a communications consultant for a Las Vegas casino and then for a stock brokerage firm.

She enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 13, 1945, in Chicago and attended boot camp in Washington, D.C. She served as a communications specialist and was assigned to COM-8 in New Orleans, La., and Mobile, Ala. Military decorations Harriet earned during her military career included the Good Conduct, American Theatre and World War II Victory Medals. Harriet was discharged on Sept. 9, 1948, in Pensacola, Fla.

While still in the U.S. Navy, she met her future husband, Walt Coon, on a streetcar named "Desire." Harriet and Walt were married on March 8, 1947, in New Orleans. After moving several times, they eventually made their home in Azusa, Calif., where they lived for 49 years. Harriet served as a volunteer for a local suicide prevention hotline for many years. Upon his retirement, Harriet and Walt traveled throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Alaska. In 2006, they moved to Coeur d'Alene where they have resided since. They moved to Bristol Heights Assisted Living in 2012. The family is very grateful to the staff at that facility for their loving care.

Harriet was a member of the WAVES National Group and American Legion.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents and husband Walt. She is survived by sons, Larry (Cassandra) of Chino Hills, Calif., and Marty (Chelly) of Hayden; grandchildren, Jarod (Alex) Coon of Hayden and Bonnie (Ben) Fairfield of Coeur d'Alene; great-grandchildren, Paige, Noah and Jacob; sister Clara Levitas of West Hills, Calif.; niece Jane Snyder, and nephews, Robert and Daniel Dupsky, all of California.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, with burial following at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Idaho.
