The Plains High School golf team came out strong in defense of their home turf on Saturday as they hosted the Plains Invitational. Teams from Thompson Falls, Ronan and Noxon showed up to challenge the Horsemen and Trotters on a sometimes rainy and chilly morning.

As the teams paired up with players of equal skill along the course, a slight drizzle began to fall. After some ground rules and an instruction to “have fun or else suffer a two-stroke penalty” from Plains Coach Rich Magera, the pairings spread along the course and began the tournament.

Cold and wet conditions did not dampen the spirits of the young men and women on Saturday as they played through obstacles including numerous pine trees and a few sand bunkers. Dallas Burgess for Plains lost a ball on hole four and had to drive again but came out of it in solid shape, hitting a 75 on the day.

Other strong showings included Cole Benson with a score of 95, Allen Imes shot 141, Jade LaDeaux hit 128 for the day and Hannah Hardcastle came in with a score of 148.

“We did pretty good. The kids are playing well. We still need to work on putting and the mid-irons on the fairway but our kids did good,” said Magera.

The Trotters and Horsemen will next play at the Thompson Falls Invitational on April 27 at 10 a.m. Magera said, “it is a really wooded course but a very good course.”
