COEUR d'ALENE - At this time last year, Alec Barrowcliff was on the Lake City High side of the rivalry with Coeur d'Alene.

This year, he's helping the Vikings on the baseball diamond, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning in the second game as Coeur d'Alene swept Lake City 5-1 and 14-4 at Ted Page Field in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Tuesday.

"They're a good group of guys," Barrrowcliff said of his former teammates. "I grew up playing with them and they love the game just like we do."

It was the senior second baseman's first home run of the season.

"It felt great," Barrowcliff said. "Anything to help the team is good. I just waited for my pitch and it felt good off the bat and to round first and realize it was gone was a good feeling."

During the summer, Barrowcliff's family moved from a house next to Lake City into the Coeur d'Alene district. After talking with some friends from Coeur d'Alene, he transferred.

"I also grew up with some of the kids that went here and they said the classes were good," Barrowcliff said. "So I took the chance and tried something new."

Barrowcliff also had an RBI triple and scored a run in the first game for Coeur d’Alene (13-4, 5-2 5A IEL), which hosts Lewiston on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at noon.

“We’ve been struggling a bit at the plate and Alec waited and got his pitch and hit one over the fence,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Rook said. “It was good to have some quality at-bats up and down the lineup and hit what the pitcher was giving us.”

In the first game, Lake City loaded the bases twice, but was unable to score any runs.

“We need to be able to score runs,” Lake City coach Travis Georgius said. “We just have a hard time competing, especially in a close one like that and it’s tough to come back. We’ve got six more games to go before districts, so hopefully we’ll figure it out.”

Jonny Plum and Kolby DeHaas had two-run doubles for Coeur d’Alene in the second game.

Lake City (4-9, 2-5) hosts Lewiston today in a makeup doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

PRIEST RIVER — Bryce Johnson went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs for the Tigers in the Intermountain League win over the Spartans.

Timberlake (8-6, 4-1 IML) busted the game open with a big sixth inning, sparked by a three-run double off the bat of Kaden Foster.

The Tigers added seven more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.

“I like that it was close, we stayed in it, and didn’t get impatient at the plate,” Tigers coach Bill Rider said. “Then we timed up the pitching and put the ball in play with regularity, and that made the difference late in the game.”

Hunter Tonkin and Trevor Masterson each had two RBIs for Timberlake, which travels to Kellogg on Saturday for a double-header.

Ashton Brooks went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Spartans (8-4, 4-1), who committed six errors. Priest River travels to Kettle Falls for a nonleague game on Thursday.
