COEUR d'ALENE - "Lake City is really good and can hit the ball," said Coeur d'Alene High softball coach Larry Bieber following Tuesday's 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Larry Schwenke Field.
The visiting Timberwolves pounded out 24 runs on 23 hits in the doubleheader as they swept the Vikings 14-1 and 10-0 to improve to 13-0 on the season.
"I just think right now, we're strong in the batting lineup 1 through 9," Lake City coach Laura Tolzmann said. "Any one person can get a big hit. We were a little aggressive in the box today and competed a little bit."
Lindsey Willmon drove in five runs and Casey Stangel four runs in the first game for Lake City (7-0 5A IEL), which travels to Post Falls today at 3:30 p.m.
“We were just focused on hitting the ball really well today,” Stangel said. “It doesn’t matter who we’re playing right now, it’s the same game. I think after last week (Lake City beat Coeur d’Alene 9-1 at Lake City), we knew we could do more. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we need to play better than we did last week and came out and do what we know how to do.”
Stangel allowed one hit in each game of the doubleheader — both to Coeur d’Alene’s Brooke Albertson, who homered in the first game and singled in the second.
“Two hits is two too many,” Stangel said. “Our defense played awesome today, and that’s why we can get through these games with that few of hits. Nothing gets by Vanessa (Shippy) at second. She’s nails out there and Jordyn (McCracken) was great at first base. It was just an awesome team effort today.”
In the second game, Coeur d’Alene rotated four pitchers throughout the game — sometimes switching pitchers in the middle of the count.
“We tried to get them out of kilter and the rules say they can do that,” Bieber said. “If we could have played any kind of defense today, we might have been able to hang with them, but we didn’t.”
Coeur d’Alene (13-5, 5-3) hosts Lewiston in a doubleheader on Saturday and will be without starting pitcher Lindsie Scholwinski, who will be away for family reasons.
“We’re going to see if they can play defense behind some of our younger pitchers,” Bieber said. “We’ll get to see what they’re made of, because we’re going to need them down the stretch.”

Timberlake 10
Priest River 6
PRIEST RIVER — Sydnie Malloy went 3 for 3 and scored four runs to lead the Tigers to an Intermountain League win over the Spartans
Timberlake (9-4, 6-1 IML) scored four runs in the top of the first inning and added two runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to seal the win.
“It’s always a battle,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “Priest River always hits the ball, they’re well coached, and (Brittany) Krampert is a great pitcher. Facing her is not an easy thing to do but I thought we hit the ball well top to bottom today.”
Krampert, who went 3 for 4 with a double, suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs for Priest River (8-7, 2-3 IML), which makes up a double-header with Kellogg at home on Thursday.
Lexi Posch hit a solo home run for the Tigers, who travel to Kellogg on Saturday for a doubleheader.
