Studio unveils new mosaic panel
Daily Inter-Lake | UPDATED 11 years, 9 months AGO
Stumptown Art Studio will unveil the second of four mosaic panels depicting life in Whitefish May 2.
The community public art project, Windows on Whitefish, has been in full swing since January 2012. The first panel, “Spring,” was unveiled Sept. 25.
“Summer” will be revealed at 6 p.m. May 2, at a reception that coincides with downtown’s first Whitefish Gallery Nights event of the season. Stumptown, along with 13 other galleries, will feature opening receptions for their exhibits that evening until 9 p.m. The popular annual Student Spring Show and ice cream social follows the mural unveiling at Stumptown Art Studio.
Patrons are also invited to try a “WOW-tini” at Latitude 48 that evening. Half of all proceeds from the drink sales will be donated to the Windows on Whitefish project.
The final mural will be installed on the Latitude 48 building’s exterior wall at the corner of Second Street and Central Avenue. The final mural will depict the Whitefish Range in each season and will capture the essence of life in Whitefish.
“Public art always speaks well of a community, and this project will be quite unique,” a news release from Stumptown Art Studio says. “Not only is the finished work of art being permanently displayed in public view, but the public is invited to participate in the creation of the work. The murals will beautify our downtown, encourage community participation and welcome visitors to Whitefish.”
Deb Stika, the project’s artistic director, has developed the images that will be used in the murals and has been assisting and instructing the general public in the construction of the murals. The entire community has been welcome to participate.
Every month, Stumptown Art Studio schedules mosaic workshops at what is now dubbed WOW headquarters — the old Coldwell Baker building at 105 Baker Ave. Beginning in June, participants in the workshops will create hanging mosaic garden charms while learning the art of mosaic-making in preparation for working on the full-size, 6- by 9-foot window.
