Mary Curtiss, 92
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 9 months AGO
Mary Curtiss, 92, passed away on April 21, comforted by the presence of her children and grandchildren. She was a long term resident of Heritage Place and a new resident of Coeur d’Alene Homes. She was a member of Coeur d’Alene Bible Church and supporter of Seed Time Ministries.
Mary was born in Virginia, a great-great-grand-daughter of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. She exhibited great artistic talent at a young age, and was destined to become an artist. She attended college at St Mary’s School in North Carolina and Maryland Institute College of Art and John Hopkins University in Baltimore.
She served her country in WWII by joining the Red Cross to provide recreational activities to recovering soldiers in Charleston. After the war, Mary worked in publishing and maintained an art studio in Greenwich Village until she married James. They lived in Ohio and Virginia, while raising a family of five. She continued to paint, often using her children as models. Upon retiring, they chose to move to Coeur d’Alene to be near family. She painted and taught art classes, with many of her works displayed locally, and pursued other interests ranging from editing books to studying the Bible.
Mary was preceded in death by husband James, son John, daughter Elizabeth, sister Eleanor Douthat, and brothers Jack Curtiss and Eugene Bunge. She is survived by daughter Ellen Delavan and husband Gregory of Coeur d’Alene; daughter Laura Inglima and husband Richard of Homer, AK; son Timothy Curtiss and wife Debra of Tierra Verde, FL; grandchildren Jeston and Michaela Delavan, Alex and Anjuli Inglima; sister Dorothy Bunge; nephews and nieces Christine and Tim Davis, Carol and Tom Radkiewicz, David and Kate Bunge, and Thomas and Kelly Bunge.
Her family thanks those who cared for her at Heritage Place and Coeur d’Alene Homes, loved her, and became her extended family.
Memorial services will be held 3 pm Tuesday, April 30 at Heritage Place Chapel, 702 West Walnut Ave., following a private family burial at Riverview Cemetery. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Please visit Mary’s memorial at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
