RATHDRUM - Rathdrum's newest park is getting national attention.

The U.S. Department of Interior in a report recently touted Majestic Park as a shining example of how agency partnerships can improve communities by providing recreation opportunities.

Rathdrum used city funds, impact fees and community donations to match a $117,927 Land and Water Conservation Fund development grant to build the 12-acre park on the city's southeast side that opened last year.

The grant was funded primarily from oil and gas lease revenues derived from federal lands and no taxpayer funds.

"Many people understand the health and social benefits parks provide - improving fitness, enhancing the quality of the environment and helping families and neighbors connect with one another," said National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis.

"Parks are also economic drivers, making them valuable community assets."

Majestic Park - Rathdrum's newest park since 1984- includes ballfields, a playground, splash pad and open space. The splash pad will be open for Memorial Day weekend and be on through Labor Day.

"We have already seen an increase in usage of the park as warmer weather appears," said Brett Boyer, city administrator. "It is exciting to receive some national recognition for our park."

The splash pad's features turn off automatically if the amenity is not being used. The splash pad will be turned off from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Rathdrum was one of 338 communities that received $42 million in such grants to establish or expand parks, build trails or make natural area improvements last year.
