PREP SOFTBALL: Kellogg sweeps Timberlake for IML title

KELLOGG - In about as wild a doubleheader as you could imagine, Kellogg won both games in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun eight-time defending Intermountain League champion Timberlake and win the IML for the first time in school history Saturday at Kellogg Middle School.

Aleasha Barr scored on a bases-loaded walk with two out in the bottom of the seventh in the first game as Kellogg won 12-11.

In the second game, Kellogg scored five runs in the last of the seventh, with Tarah Ivie doubling in the tying run, then scoring on Hayley Zisk's single for a 16-15 triumph.

The wins catapulted Kellogg (10-5, 7-2 Intermountain League) over Timberlake (9-6, 6-3) on the final day of the regular season.

"I'm very proud of my girls," said Kellogg coach Craig Turbak, who along with pitching coach Rick Stewart have been with the program since it started 13 years ago. "We were down and came back to win the first game and in the second game, we were down and I told the girls we need five runs to win it, and they just did it. It was a slugfest and give credit to Timberlake, they're a good team. It just came down to whoever hit the ball the best and whoever made the fewest errors. It was awesome (to come back). I was jumping up and down and just couldn't believe it."

Timberlake, the class of the league for most of the past decade, committed 15 errors in the two games.

"You put up that many runs on the day and you get swept, and you know your defense wasnt ready to compete," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "They made less mistakes than we did.

"I'm a bit speechless," he added. "To come out the other day against Priest River and play good softball ... it's just frustrating."

In the first game, Ivie hit a grand slam in Kellogg's six-run second inning. Megan Slattery answered with a grand slam in Timberlake's seven-run third.

The 3A District 1 tournament begins Thursday at Timberlake. No. 2 seed Timberlake plays No. 3 Priest River at 3 p.m., followed by No. 1 Kellogg vs. No. 4 Bonners Ferry at 5.

The tourney concludes May 7 at Timberlake, with the champion advancing to state May 17-18 at Buhl, and the runner-up heading to a state play-in game May 11.

DeHAAS

from B1

Bengals having a doubleheader Tuesday against visiting Post Falls remaining in league. Coeur d'Alene travels to Lake City, then plays Post Falls twice to wrap league play. With wins in all three remaining league games, Coeur d'Alene will be the No. 1 seed at the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene split their four games in league play. The second tiebreaker for the league title comes down to how each fared against the next team in the standings - Lake City entering Saturday.

Coeur d'Alene has won all three against Lake City, with Lewiston going 3-1 against the Timberwolves.

"We've got to take it game by game," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "Obviously we'll need to focus on Tuesday and let that take care of itself. It's good to be in a position to control your own destiny, but we just need to continue to compete and see where the chips fall."

DeHaas' older brother Kaleb is a sophomore third baseman at NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa.

"He's been down there hitting bombs this year, so it's good to finally get one," DeHaas said. "He never had a walk-off, so it was good to get one up on him."

"It was a great job by Kolby getting a pitch and putting it over the fence," Rook said. "Our kids are learning to compete more and more. They did a good job, and it's good to get the split. Now, next week is paramount for our season."

John Fuller and Kyler Brooks had four hits each in the first game for the Bengals, who scored seven runs in the first four innings off Viking starter Sean Sutton. Lewiston starter Tyler Charlo struck out five over seven innings.

The loss was Coeur d'Alene's first at home since the 2010 season.

"Credit to Charlo, he threw well," Rook said. "Sean's thrown well all year and that's his first outing where he's been hit all around. You've got to score more than two runs to win a high school game, but they showed up to hit that first game."

Lewiston finished with 17 hits in the first game, compared to four in the second game.

"We've had a few games lately like the first game at Lake City (won 18-14 Wednesday) and today where we just seem to be a real contagious team and when someone starts hitting, other guys are hitting," Lewiston coach Tom Grunenfelder said. "Then, if a few guys aren't hitting, then nobody is, like the second game."

Lewiston committed eight errors in the second game, three coming in the fifth inning to allow Coeur d'Alene to take a 3-1 lead.

"Our pitching was really good today," Grunenfelder said. "Outside of that inning, I thought we played 16 innings of really good defense."
