District 1 music festival results

Flathead and Glacier high schools hosted the 2013 District No. 1 Music Festival on April 18-20. Students represented high schools across Northwest Montana. 

Judges provided verbal and written comments to help students improve and rated each performance as superior, excellent, good, fair and poor. 

Solos and ensembles receiving superior ratings qualify to attend the State Solo and Ensemble Festival in Missoula May 3-4. Following are results for Columbia Falls High School:

Superior performance and sight reading: Wind Ensemble, Columbia Chorales, Tres Belles, String Orchestra

Excellent performance and sight reading: Symphonic Band, Concert Band 

Superior band ensembles: Columbians (Jazz I); Nikki Brievik and Will Flynn (French horn duet); Wyatt Vanham and Josh Potter (snare duet); Wyatt Vanham and Zayner Brunz (mallet duet); Bryce Swanson and Chanel Intaratanod (flute duet); Will Flynn, Nikki Brievik, Mary Gross and Katilyn Barnes (woodwind quartet) 

Excellent band ensembles: Jazz Factory (Jazz II); Jazz Trio; Flute Choir; Percussion Ensemble I; Percussion Tech; Ashley Ramstad and Shannon Hay (flute duet); Ashley Ramstad, Shannon Hay and Katelyn Kienas (flute trio); Zach Ronish, Carlee Brown and Arlyn Jorgenson (snare trio); Josh Potter, Wyatt Vanham, Tommy Connolly, Zayne Brunz (percussion quartet); Bryce Swanson and Shalyce Bodily (flute duet)

Excellent string ensemble: Skye Hatfield and Hunter Brown, (duet); Kendra Skelton and Hunter Brown, (duet)

Superior vocal ensembles: Brooke Wilson and Amanda Morrison, (duet); Micinzie Christopherson and McKenna Emmerich, (duet); Matthew Erhart and Meredith Stolte, (duet); Micinzie Christopherson, Jasmine Goodwin, McKenna Emmerich (trio); Sonifers

Excellent vocal ensembles: Lottie Ellis and Kelcie Christenson, (duet); Mara Barnes and Dakota Henson, (duet); Marquis Isley and Kendra Stevens

Superior band solos: Bryce Swanson (flute); Chanel Intaratanod (oboe, baritone saxophone); Ada Brooks (euphonium); Henry Chisolm (tenor saxophone); Nikki Brievik (French horn); William Flynn (French horn)

Excellent band solos: Trystan Butcher (trumpet); Skyler Smith (clarinet); Mack Miller (clarinet); Erick Franklund (trombone)

Superior string solo: Skye Hatfield

Superior vocal solos: Brooke Wilson, Amanda Morrison, Matthew Erhart, Ada Brooks, Meredith Stolte, Micah Sperry

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
