OLYMPIA - A Moses Lake High School student just spend a week in Olympia, gaining first-hand experience of the state Legislature.

Freshman Maddie Plumage, 15, served as a page in the state House of Representatives. She was sponsored by 16th District Rep. Maureen Walsh.

"It was a pleasure having Maddie with us in Olympia. She's a smart girl and has a bright future," said Walsh, R-Walla Walla.

"I hope she had a great experience and learned a lot about government and the Legislature."

Marge Plumage, Maddie's grandmother, serves as a legislative aide to Walsh.

During her week in Olympia, Plumage attended page school, learning the operations and actions of the Legislature. At the end of the week, she wrote and promoted a mock bill regarding elderly drivers and road safety.

As part of her page duties, Plumage delivered messages and documents to lawmakers and staff.

Each year, students in the state can apply to participate in the page program, learning about the legislative system and earning $35 per day.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information, visit the legislative website at www.leg.wa.gov.
