POST FALLS - Post Falls wants your input on whether creating future activity centers is a good idea and, if so, where those districts should be in the city and what they should look like.

The city of Post Falls will hold a community open house tonight at the Post Falls Library, 821 N. Spokane St., from 5:30-7:30 to gather input on how Post Falls should grow from a business standpoint.

Hilary Anderson, Post Falls planning manager, said the purpose is to present the idea of business districts to improve the livability in those areas.

"Participants will have the chance to weigh in on the concept of district planning in a questionnaire and help identify areas of the city where they would support having an identified district," said Anderson, adding that there will also be a large map of the city to identify possible district sites.

"They can put stickers on the map if they support having a district in a certain area of the city."

If the community supports the concept of having districts in Post Falls, city staff will work with business owners, property owners and other stakeholders to develop a plan unique to each district.

A district plan may also include standards so there is a certain look or theme regarding architecture, signage and landscaping.

Some cities, including Spokane, Portland, Denver and Seattle, have such districts. Spokane districts include University and Perry.

No specific projects will be discussed at the open house, Anderson said.

There will be four informational stations at the open house, including:

* an overview of activity centers and corridors and information detailing the difference between district plans and master plans;

* types of districts and the benefits of district plans;

* a city map to identify possible district sites; and

* a questionnaire asking participants whether they support district planning and their top three districts and ideas for them.

"We will also be asking participants if they would want to be involved in district planning efforts for a district where they are a stakeholder," Anderson said.
