SANDPOINT - The nine-hole Elks Golf Course in Sandpoint doesn't appear too difficult when looking at the layout or scorecard, but traditionally it yields higher than normal scores for those who don't play it often.

That was not the case for Lakeland's Derek Bayley on Monday at the Sandpoint Invitational, as the junior carded a four-under par 66 to beat the field by 10 strokes and lead the Hawks to the team title, taking down 5A state powers Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston.

The small greens, abundant out-of-bounds possibilities and a trees were no problem for Bayley, who is being looked at by the University of Washington, among other schools. Preston Roth shot a 79, as the Hawks posted a 323, six shots better than three teams tied at second.

"Our boys won their first tourney this year," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "And our girls for first time ever won a tournament, so it was a good day for us."

Most local teams are in action at the Lakeland Invitational on Thursday, with 17 boys teams at the Links Golf Course, and 14 girls teams at Twin Lakes Village.
