HELENA — An 11-run seventh inning helped the Libby Loggers to a 14-8 win over the Helena Reps in the first round of the Class A American Legion baseball state tournament at Kindrick Legion Field Friday.

Libby (37-20) trailed 8-3 entering the seventh before taking advantage of Helena’s defensive meltdown. The Reps committed five errors in the inning, allowing 11 runs to score on five hits.

“We knew we weren’t playing well, but if we could keep it close we knew we had a chance to put some runs on the board. Thankfully we were able to do that,” Loggers coach Kelly Morford said.

Libby’s first five hitters in the seventh inning reached base safely before Micah Germany struck out. Oliver Grupenhoff smacked a two-run, bases-loaded double to cut the Loggers’ deficit to one, then Andrew Haggerty followed with an RBI double to tie the score at 8. Grupenhoff scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error.

Collin Johnson led the Loggers with three hits in four at bats. Will Reichel, Luke Haggerty, Jared Winslow and Andrew Haggerty each had two hits.

Winslow, who can’t pitch because of an elbow injury, showed he can still do damage on offense by knocking in six of Libby’s 14 runs.

Luke Haggerty was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs in 5.2 innings in relief of Germany.

The Loggers play the Glasgow Reds at 4 p.m. today. Glasgow defeated Lethbridge (Alberta) 10-5 in the first round.

“We can be happy that we were able to come back and win that game, but we know we have to play better going forward,” Morford said. “Especially against a good Glasgow team.”

Reilly Leary had two hits for Helena (46-15), which will play Lethbridge today at 9 a.m. in a loser-out contest.
