ADAMS COUNTY - Vehicle parts remained scattered down a ditch Wednesday afternoon where five people were injured after their vehicle rolled off of Interstate 90, about 20 miles west of Ritzville.

According to the state patrol, a family from Federal Way was heading west on I-90 about 1:45 p.m. when their car, a white 2007 Ford Focus, drifted into the median. The driver, Ornaldo A. Zalpa, 56, reportedly over corrected to the right, causing the car to begin rolling on the shoulder. The car rolled several times, coming to rest on its wheels more than 150 feet from the road.

Both the driver and the passenger in the front seat, Ornaldo A. Zalpa-Barajas, 18, were trapped inside the vehicle and firefighters had to cut open the passenger door to remove the two, according to the state patrol.

Zalpa-Barajas suffered a serious head injury and was transported by Medstar to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. He was reportedly alert and talking to emergency personnel on scene.

Zalpa and three other passengers, Irma Garcia-Cruz, 39, and two girls, ages 13 and 6, were transported to East Adams Rural Hospital in Ritzville for treatment. Garcia-Cruz possibly suffered two broken arms, according to the state patrol.

I-90 west was closed for about 30 minutes for Medstar.

All five people in the vehicle were reportedly wearing seat belts.

The State Patrol determined the cause of the crash was inattention.
